Michael, son of Alexander Brown, was baptised on 29 November 1734 in Saint John, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.[1].
Michael married Susanna Hilton on 15 November 1759 in Saint John, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.[2]
He worked as a shoemaker and tanner, and moved to Wapping Wall, London.[3]
Circa 1765, he started a coal company at Bridewell with his wife’s cousin Gregory French. The company, originally French, Brown, & Armorer, is listed in Kent’s Directory for 1765, 1767, 1768, 1769, and 1770, becoming French & Brown by 1769.[4]. Michael eventually left the coal business and became a tanner again, returning to Newcastle by 1779[5]
Near the end of his life, he was a ballast assessor at the port of South Shields.[6]
