Biography

Susanna (maiden name unknown) was married to Isaac Whitehead before 1650.[1]Their first child was born in 1650 in New Haven, Connecticut. Susanna and Isaac had several children, including two (Abigail and Nathaniel) that were born after the family's 1666 move to Elizabeth, New Jersey. For this reason, as well as the date of their first child's birth, it can be deduced that Susanna was born between 1624 and 1632, with 1628 being a likely birth year. (Susanna would have be at least 17 in 1649, and likely not older than 45 in 1669.) Susanna died before 1689, when Isaac remarried to Mary Yates Higgins.

Name

Susanna's first name can be found in the following marriage record: Torry, Clarence A. New England Marriages Prior to 1700. Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2004. Susanna's maiden name is unknown. The following records from Yates Publishing, known as "U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900" an on-line database on Ancestry.com, need to be verified with a primary source and should not be considered factual until such a time. They list Isaac's wife as "Mary Brown, married in New Jersey in 1650"[2] and "Mary Brown, born in 1628 Connecticut"[3]. Isaac was neither living in nor was he married in New Jersey in 1650. He did not move to New Jersey until 1666. Isaac's first wife's name is unknown, over the years, people have confused his first and second wives to a point that records such as the ones cited become "fact" [4]

The name Brown is listed for Isaac's wife, but as questionable, in a bulletin of the Presbyterian Church of Morristown, in 1880/1.[5] That is almost two centuries later and based on unspecified sources, presumably family hearsay, and stated as uncertain. It may be the basis for the Yates entries -- and should likewise be discounted.

The links to the Ancestry Trees are no longer valid. They are not useful sources in any event as they do not refere to any documentation that provides verifiable evidence. Does any one mind if we remove them?

Unknown-211246 and Brown-6813 do not represent the same person because: For the 3rd time, these are different people, the children were born while Mary Unknown was married to Richard Higgins. Please read bios before suggesting merges
