Biography

Phebe (Brown), wife of James Cornish died "in childbirth" December 28, 1664, in Northampton, Massachusetts.[1]

Phoebe Browne (Phebe) was baptized on 1st October 1620 in Rusper, Sussex.[2] She married Thomas Lee. Phoebe & Thomas had three children baptized in Rusper, Sussex (Jane 13/09/1640, Phoebe 20/05/1642 & Thomas 29/09/1644 - but one source says Thomas was actually born in 1639).[3]Another source of the children's baptisms is available at this site:[4] Further information about these children:[5]

  • Phebe, born in England; married Nov 1, 1659, John Large, son of William Large of Hingham and Cape Cod; lived at Lyme, and afterwards on Long Island
  • Jane, born in England; m (1) June 1659, Samuel Hyde, son of William; m (2) John Birchard; d at Lebanon, Conn., Jan 21, 1722/3
  • Thomas, b in England; m (1) Sarah Kirtland of Saybrook; m (2) Mary DeWolf, daughter of Balthazar DeWolf; died at Lyme, Jan 5, 1704/5

Phoebe emigrated to America with her parents in 1646, but her husband Thomas died on the voyage with smallpox. She married secondly Greenfield Larrabee in about 1647 and had five children (Greenfield 20/04/1648, John 23/02/1650, Elizabeth 23/02/1653, Joseph 03/03/1656, Sarah 03/03/1658). She married thirdly James Cornish in about 1661[6] and had one child (James), and maybe one still born.

When she married Greenfield, Phebe was identified as the widow of Thomas Lee and the daughter of William Brown of Ruskin, England, Saybrook, CT, and South Hampton and Hempstead, Long Island.

I believe Rusper, Sussex, England is an early transcription error. My hunch is that the town in question was Rochford, Essex, England. Anyone else onto this?

What sources show the daughter Sarah?

Since Torrey lists "Phebe/Sarah? LEE" as marrying John Large in 1659 at Lyme/Saybrook, and because the Lees only came with 3 children from England to New England according to multiple quality sources, my suspicion is that Phebe and Sarah both refer to the same person. Phebe has a birth record in England, while Sarah does not. It wouldn't be the first time the same error was copied repeatedly.

removed William Brown-23653 as father. He died as an infant

A birth record for Phebe Lee in 1620 doesn't make sense because she was born with the last name of Browne.

There are some gedcom upload dup.s of William Brown. I initially connected to one of those in error. For more common names I will search harder and use the process of elimination. Sorry for the 'newbie' error.
FYI Phoebe Browne was married 3 times so that makes 4 valid surnames for her. Looks like she's been worked by us each from each one of those marriages. Interesting.
What source shows her father and his birth/death dates? It does not appear the William Brown selected has the same birthdate or place as that sourced on the dup of this profile. If there are no sources, it might be better to disconnect him.

Browne-3861 and Browne-523 appear to represent the same person because: Exact same person.
Browne-523 and Brown-33938 appear to represent the same person and should be merged.
