Still at 3110 South Union in 1930, the Brown household was made up on Ralph, Edith, Ralph Jr, Bob, Duane, and Edith's nephew, Richard Backstrom, son of Merle.[1] Just down the street were Edith's parents, and further, her sister Grace's family. The Browns owned the home, worth $1100. Ralph's father is listed as being born in Massachusetts, which is wrong, but may be a clue as to where some of the family ended up. Ralph is working as a mechanic in a garage.
In 1940, Buster was at home with his brothers and mother, Edith and Ralph having divorced, at 17 Park Ave, Des Moines, Iowa. The home included Edith, Ralph Jr, Bob, and Duane.[2] Edith was a machine operator for a sewing project, while Ralph Jr was driving a truck for the NYA workshop. Edith made $572 the previous year, while Ralph had made $60.
