Biography

Sarah Brown or Browne

Spelling of the Name

Anderson uses the spelling "Brown" in his feature on Sarah's father, Abraham Brown.[1] Others (including Bond and Banks) have used the spelling "Browne."

Origin

Sary (Browne) Parkhurst immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Sarah was born "say" 1627, probably in England, a daughter of Abraham Browne and his wife, Lydia Unknown.[1] Her father was made freeman at Watertown on 6 March 1631/2.[1]

A more recent source than Anderson, shows her mother to be Abraham's first wife, Joan Shelton.[2]

A pedigree published by Bond reports that some of the early Browne immigrants to Massachusetts were closely related and originated at Hawkedon, Suffolk.[3] However, Anderson points out that the identification is supported by only two Hawkedon records, neither of which connects to New England.[1]

Some researchers have assumed that the Browne family immigrated aboard one of the ships of the Winthrop Fleet. Since there are no extant passenger lists however, we do not know which voyage was Sarah's; it may or may not have been among the Winthrop Fleet.[4] Note: The Abraham Browne family is included by Banks in his compiled list of possible Winthrop Fleet passengers,[5] but there is no evidence.

Christening

30 JUL 1620 Childerditch, Essex, England

Marriage

Sarah married on 16 Dec 1643 at Watertown, to George Parkhurst, Jr..[6]

Uncertain Child(ren)

George Parkhurst, Jr had two children born at Watertown: John and Sarah. Both had a mother named Sary (or Sarah). Children:[6]

  1. John Parkhurst, b 10 June 1644 Watertown
  2.  ? Sary (Sarah) Parkhurst, b 14 Sept 1649 Watertown

Robert C. Anderson in his article "English Origins of Edward Garfield ..." discusses the possibility that George Parkhurst married two different wives named Sarah. The will of Edward Garfield mentions granddaughter Sarah Parkhurst, although his daughter Abigail (thought to have married John Parkhurst) is clearly identified in the same will as unmarried. Therefore, another daughter must have also married a Parkhurst.

In addition, the settlement of the Abraham Browne estate mentions grandson, John Parkhurst, but does not mention granddaughter, Sarah Parkhurst. Therefore, Sarah (Browne) may not have been the mother of Sarah Parkhurst.

Possibly George Parkhurst married twice to wives named Sarah, 1st to Sarah Browne (mother of John), and 2nd to Sarah Parkhurst (mother of Sarah).[7]

Death and Legacy

Profile reports that Sarah died on 6 Oct 1691 at Watertown, but there is no evidence for this death date and place in the Watertown Records.[6]

Sarah died before 24 September 1650, the date of George's second marriage to Mary Pheza?

George Parkhurst married on 24 September 1650 at Watertown to Mary Pheza.[6]

Sarah was born in 1628. Sarah Browne ... She passed away in 1691.

Is there a response from the PGM googlegroup to Richard Flanagin's question below?
I see conversations on this page only about chance that there could be two Sarah's. However, in Records of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in Watertown beginning 1630, p 15, Image 247, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSSR-NSRS-8?i=246 , it reads 1650 "George Parkhust & Mary pheza Marryed the 25: 1: m." So, this is clearly talking about a Mary, although I remain uncertan what pheza is. Anyway, because this is a very old record, (it still has "f" many times for what we would use "s") It should have, in general more significance than more recent sources!

The handwritten original record is visible at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G979-D4CQ?i=62&cc=2061550&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQPZR-1FPZ . Actually both the handwritten record and the printed transcript linked above in Richard's comment date the marriage to 24 September 1650, not "25: 1: m."; but there's no question that the bride's first name is Mary.

As to the apparent last name "Pheza" -- that does indeed seem to be the spelling -- I have labored over that for quite some time, and cannot conceive what surname the recorder was attempting to sound out: something like "Pfister" would seem the most logical, but I find no record of any Pfisters/Fisters in Massachusetts for another 50-plus years.

Torrey suggests Mary's surname might have been VEAZEY, though based on the writing elsewhere the recorder wrote "pheza".

Thanks, Bobbie -- I missed that, and it makes a lot more sense. The location in question is Watertown, and Anderson in the GMD shows a Robert Veazy arriving there in 1636... origin unknown. Let me rummage around in the records on freereg.org.uk and see if by any chance I can find a Mary born to a Robert in the right time period, on the chance that she was born on that side of the Pond.

Ah: Torrey actually regards Mary as a widow: "VEAZEY, Robert & Mary ____, m/2 George PARKHURST; by 1636(7?), by 1648/9; Watertown, CT" (NEHGS; https://www.americanancestors.org/DB1568/i/21176/1568/426908008, by subscription)... but curiously, he shows the Watertown in question as being in Connecticut. That can't be right: Anderson clearly places Robert at Watertown, Massachusetts.

Mary's LNAB, if profiled on WT, would have to be Unknown.

And what about the surname "Brown" "Browne" and the parents attached, Christopher?

Anderson clearly accepts that George Parkhurst ("the younger") married Sarah, daughter of Abraham Brown[e] of Watertown. [As to spelling, well, Abraham was christened "Broune"; I think I'd stay with the current "Browne" for Sarah.]

It also seems clear, from the record noted above, that George had a subsequent marriage to Mary (Unknown) ?Veazy.

In between the two, however, Anderson makes an interesting case (see NEHGR Vol. 156; inline citation above) that George _may_ have had a marriage to Sarah Garfield. This marriage would have been fairly brief; son John, a child of George and Sarah Browne, was born in 1644, and George's marriage to Mary ?Veazy (evidently the widow of GM emigrant Robert, of Watertown) came in 1650.

At present, George's profile refers readers to this page for a discussion of his known/possible marriages. Said discussion really belongs on his profile. I will try to digest this comment thread, and add the digested version over there.

I believe the assumed birth is wrong as Sarah was the 1st child. See her father's bio for more info. I will update the birth to 1620

A 1620 christening is rather impossible for a child born "say" in 1627. This would appear to be Abraham's daughter with Joan Shelton, according to the Wikitree entry on Shelton.
