Ambrose Browne was the son of Sir Matthew Browne of Betchworth Castle and his wife, Jane Vincent and was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge. He married Elizabeth Adam, daughter of William Adam of Saffron Waldon on 1 October 1607. Together they had two sons and three daughters. He was created a Baronet Browne of Betchworth Castle on 7 July 1627.
Ambrose was first elected to Parliament in 1628 as member for Surrey, then twice in 1640 being excluded at the time of Pride's Purge in 1648.
In 1654 he was visited by the diarist John Evelyn at his home at Betchworth Castle.
Ambrose died in 1661 and was succeeded by his son, Adam.
