Disambiguation

Please note that this John Brown[e] of Marlborough and Gloucester is a different person from Capt. John Browne of Marblehead. This profile of the Gloucester man originally showed him as marrying, first, Elizabeth Legg; she was however the first and only wife of Capt. John Browne of Marblehead. The Marblehead marriage record clearly identifies Elizabeth Legg's spouse as the emigrant Capt. John Browne, originally "of Exeter, Eng."

This error crops up elsewhere on the Internet; for one influential example, see "Steve Condarcure's New England Genealogy", listing for John Brown of Gloucester: http://www.genealogyofnewengland.com/f_8b4.htm#8 .

Biography

John Browne (aka Brown) was born in Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay on November 27, 1664, a son of John and Esther [aka Hester] (Makepeace) Browne.

John married a woman named Rebecca [Ingersoll?] about 1692. They resided in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts Bay. John and Rebecca had the following children: John III, Joseph, Sarah, Rebecca, Elisha, Jonathan, Rachel, a second Jonathan & Joseph.

After Rebecca's death in Gloucester, John married 2nd Elizabeth (Robinson) Somes, widow of Timothy Somes, on 3 Apr 1713.

John passed away at about 70 years of age in Gloucester on March 13, 1731/2.

Per my private message, and my comment on the profile for Elizabeth Legg, I've now created a profile -- Capt. John Browne -- for the correct husband of Elizabeth Legg (who married a quite different John Browne from the gent of this profile... as is clearly shown by the Marblehead marriage record giving her husband's origin as Exeter, England). The "new" John Browne is also the correct father of Hannah (Browne) LeGallais and Elizabeth (Browne) Holyoke.

I've added sources to this profile, and made a number of related edits. Absent (sourced, please!) objections, I have now removed the link between this John Browne and Elizabeth Legg's profile.

I've also revised the profile for my (putative) remote cousin Rebecca Ingersoll to indicate that she was the first wife, not the second, of John Brown[e] of Marlborough and Gloucester.
