Biography

Sir Matthew Browne was born about 1475 to Sir George Browne of Beechworth Castle in Surrey. His father was executed for treason in 1483. His son was sheriff of Surrey in 1496, knighted, and living in 1530. He married Fridiswide, daughter of a prominent courtier Sir Richard Guildford KG. They had a son Henry (who predeceseased his father, but was father of Thomas, Matthew's successor) and two daughters, Jane (marr Sir Edward Bray) and Elizabeth (Catherine in some genealogies) (marr John Poyntz).

Sir Matthew inherited Beechworth (or Betchworth) Castle near Dorking, Surrey and died in 1557 (Will, Sir Matthew Browne of Dorking Surrey, PCC pr. 7/9/1557).

He was the 7xGreat grandson of King Edward I through his paternal grandmother.

The parish register for St Martin Dorking records the following:

Browne-1234 and Browne-982 do not represent the same person because: These men were born 100 years apart with different parents. I don't think they are the same person.

Hi Dan.. There is a Wikipedia page for Sir Matthew Browne and it indicates an Elizabeth Paston was Matthew's mother.. I am a descendent of theirs through my mothers paternal side so I have been researching them.
