Biography

John Brownson was born between 1540 and 1550 at Earls Colne, Essex, England, probably the son of Cornelius Brownson.

He married, by 1576 Joan (last name unknown) who is the mother of the children in the family.

  1. Roger Brownson b1577
  2. John Brownson b 1580
  3. Alice Brownson b1584

By 1582 he had built a cottage for his family near Chalkney Croft on a piece of land called Chyffyn[1]

By 1595 he held Chalkney Croft along with his wife Joan. [2]

1598 He also held one croft of land called East Field Crofte[3] In the same year he became a warden[4]

1601 he obtained a licence to cut two oaks to build a shed (perhaps the barn that was "ruinous" in the time of his grandchildren).[5]

1611 He surrendered a parcel of land in Chalkney Croft to his son Roger[6] He also divided a Croft of adjacent land called the Fenne to his son John, who at the time was childless and the land, if no heirs would pass to his grandson Cornelius, son of Roger son.[7]

In Feb 1616/17 his wife Joan died [8]and he wasted little time finding a new wife.

1617 he was a beneficiary in the will of his sister-in-law Mary Berry

19 May 1617 John Brownson then married Mathen Taylor St Andrews Earls Colne, Essex, England [9][10]

He was buried at Earls Colne, February 4, 1622/3.[11][12]

How did we arrive at his approximate birthdate? His first documented child was christened in 1576, which argues for an estimated birthdate a good bit later than 1540.

Brownson-146 and Brownson-154 are not ready to be merged because: What we need first is some separations. The father, Cornelius, is already a composite character composed of someone in Essex and someone in Pickwick Hall, Derby, England. Since the two Johns proposed to be merged are fathers of different children, the one who does not belong here should be removed.

Brownson-146 and Brownson-154 appear to represent the same person because: Same father, The correct date of burial is 4 Feb 1622/23, making it 1623 on the modern calendar. Please merge. Thanks.

Brownson-154 and Brownson-146 are not ready to be merged because: Need to clear up who married Mary Underwood, and if these people might just be cousins.
