Biography

"Alexander Broyles appears in the census of Boyle Co., Ky., 1850 as age 50. I believe however that this age is just an approximation and that he was really younger than his brother John. We have some difficulty with his wife (or wives). One Alexander Broyles was licensed to marry Charlotte Gibson in Mercer Co., Ky., 23 Dec 1825. A tombstone inscription near the Broyles homestead in Mercer County records the death of Charlotte Broyles, 25 Oct 1834. However; descendants of this Alexander insist that he married but once, namely to Winifred Wright, who certainly seems to have been the mother of all his children, the oldest of whom was born about 1829. But there seems to be no escape from the conclusion that Alexander Broyles did obtain license to marry Charlotte Gibson and that they were married. They may have separated soon after, while she retained the Broyles name. Alexander Broyles was a taxable in Mercer Co., Ky. from 1830 to 1838. Sometime before 1850 he moved to Boyle Co., Ky. Alexander Broyles died 1 Dec 1860 His widow was still living 8 Jun 1872. On 20 Dec 1823, Jacob Gibson gives permission for his daughter Charlotte to marry Alexander Broyles. Witnesses: William Gibson, Polly Duncan. On 15 Sep 1828',Alexander Broyles married Winnafred Wright. On 2 Mar 1863, R.H.C. Mitchell, administrator of the estate of Alexander Broyles, deceased, posts bond for the performance of his duties." from The Broyles Family History.
