Biography

William Simon Broyles was the son of Michael and Elizabeth Broyles of Horse Creek in Greene County, North Carolina, now Tennessee. Michael's land was on the county line of Greene and Washington and William is found in records of both counties. He is also found as both William Simon and Simon William Broyles. He married Margaret Green in Washington County in 1821. Their children:

  1. Eliza J., b. c. 1822
  2. Susan E., b. c. 1824, m. William Jackson French
  3. Uriah Jordan, b. c. 1825, m. Rachel Cannon
  4. Thomas N., b. c. 1827, m. 1) Rebecca Cannon, 2) Mary Painter
  5. Emeline, b. c. 1830, m. Michael Gray
  6. Samuel C., b. c. 1832, m. Mary Jane Mayfield
  7. Archibald, b. c. 1834, died single
  8. Joanna, b. c. 1836, m. James Gray
  9. George Franklin, b. c. 1838, m. Barbara Moore

1810 - According to Keith,[1] William is taxed, indicating he was at least 21 years old, thus born c. 1789. This is a rare error on Keith's part. In the censuses of 1850-1870 this William (son of Michael) gives his birth year as 1793 or 1794, which indicates good consistency. Meanwhile, Adam of Cyrus had a son William A. Broyles who was born in Greene County in 1790 according to the census records, and who could easily be the one taxed in 1810.

16 Aug 1821 - William Broyles marries Margaret Green. Washington Co., Tennessee. Service by Jonathan Collom, J.P. [2]

1830 - William is listed in the census of Washington Co., Tenn. Besides his own family, he appears to have another woman (a widow?) and her young children living with him. He is living near his brother Michael.

1830 - William S. Broyles is taxed for 150 acres on Horse Creek, no polls.[3]. He appears to be living near his brothers John and Samuel.

3 Jul 1837 - Simon W. Broyles sells 25 acres in Washington Co., Tenn., formerly belonging to Michael Broyles Senr., dec'd. The land adjoins "Michael Broyls Junr & Simon William Broyls."[4]

1840 - He is listed on the census rolls of Washington Co., Tenn. Again, he is living near his brother Michael.

1840 - A William S. Broyles is taxed for 20 acres in Greene Co., Tenn.[1]

1850 - He and Margaret are listed in the Greene Co., Tenn. census. His brother Samuel, who is twenty years older than William, is living with him. They are living next door to their brother John.

1860 - William is listed in the Greene Co., Tenn. census.

1870 - He is listed again in Greene County.
