James's birth and death dates are from his obituary.[1]
James served in the Civil War for the South. He enlisted in 1861 in the 166th Regiment of the Virginia militia. He transferred to the 30th Virginia Battalion (Sharpshooters). In 1862 he was captured near Winchester, Virginia, and in 1864 was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, and was paroled in 1865.
