Research Notes

There are census records for Reuben Gregg and his wife Mary in Monona, Clayton, Iowa for 1850, 1860 and 1870. No two agree on birth places on exact age for either person. For Mary we have in the 1850 census, born in Massachusetts about 1797 ^[1] ; in 1860 it is born in Vermont about 1798 ^[2] ; and in 1870 we have born in New Hampshire about 1796.^[3] The four children who were living with the parents in 1850 have their birthplaces transcribed (at least on familysearch) as North Carolina. The source document clearly reads "U. C." which is most likely upper Canada, and that is consistent with other records for the children.

The children listed in 1850 and the grandchild in 1860 tie these records together as being the same family. Mary's birth name of Bruce is established in two vital records of her children. ^{[4] [5]}

The FamilySearch profile for Mary Bruce ^[6] gives their marriage in Canada and lists 8 children, all born in Canada. The birth and death info given there for Mary has no identifiable source. The only similar family tree on Ancestry.com ^[7] differs in some details but agrees with the Canada connection. No birth, marriage, or census records from Canada have been identified.
