Biography

  • Andrew is the 1st of Muness

Andrew Bruce of Muness was the second son of Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie and succeeded to the estates in Shetland, while his elder brother Alexander inherited those in Perthshire. He died 12th February 1645 having married in 1600 Isobel, daughter f Sir Andrew St Clair Lord therodm Coucillor of Denmark and Governor of Ghadsay and had issue:[1]

4. Elisabeth married (1631) Andrew Pitcairn of Skerpo

Andrew Bruce, m. Isobel Sinclair, daughter of Malcolm Sinclair of Quendael. They had two sons, Andrew and Alexander, and two daughters: Elizabeth and Marjory (m. Robert Bruce of Sumburgh) Married second Catherine Fordyce, daughter of James Fordyce and had a son William ancestor of Bruces of Urie.[2]

The Bruces of Cultmalindie were a minor branch of the Bruce family in Scotland, and were descendants of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland (1306-1329). Laurence Bruce was the half brother of Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney. Earl Robert was the recognized illegitimate son of James V, King of Scotland, and Eupheme Elphinstone.

Kim, I wonder if the birth date for Andrew is a bit late. The Peerage gives a date of ca 1570, which would help reduce the errors on birthdates for the next generation.
