Luke's occupation was noted in his son's marriage registration. It is hard to read. Perhaps "glassgrinder".
Luke Bruce is an unusual name. There are not too many in Ancestry.com.
There is a Luke Bruce to be found on Ancestry.com, and he is not from Scotland but from the county just south of Scotland, and this is Luke Bruce born 28 December 1790 in Alnmouth, Northumbria, son of William Bruce and Mary Yorston, and who was married to Mary Bower (married 1831 in Earsdon, Northumbria). He had children Margaret (1837) and Mary (1840). He was an Overlooker & Shipowner (1861), Marine Superintendent (1871), Shipowner (1874). See numerous public family trees with these details on Ancestry.com. Could John be his illegitimate son - he was, after all 41 when he married? [William's father was also called Luke born 1726: See Mac Wallace family tree.]
