Johan or Joan as she was called, was born to William Bruce (1839-1899) a weaver and Margaret (Brown) Bruce (1841-1924) on the 1 Feb 1875 in Dalserf a small village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. [1]
When she had reached the age of 16 she was already working as a silk weaver unmarried, as recorded in the Scotland census of 1891. Joan was living at 20 Townhead Street, Stonehouse with her parents, her father was also a silk weaver as were 4 of her siblings staying in the house with her, Mary Bruce (1862-1914),Jane Bruce (1870-),William Bruce (1872-) and Janet Bruce (1877-abt.1930). As well as these working siblings there were 3 other sisters, who were scholars Agnes Bruce (1879-abt.1940),Isabella Bruce (1882-abt.1951) and Robina (Bruce) Rae (1884-1939)[2]
