Henry Anderson Brumfield, son of Thomas Keeling Brumfield and Saluda Mayhew, was born in 1833.
He married Julia Ann Francis Craddock on 21 Feb 1865.
Together they had at least 11 children, including Julia Kate Brumfield. in 1880 the family lived in Callands, Pittsylvania, VA.
Henry served as a private in the 46th VA Infantry, C.S.A.. He and Julia also raised a niece, Sarah (b. 5-3-1874, became "Mrs. John Emerson"), and a nephew, Henry Anderson (b.1-28-1878, called "Henry"). Both were children of Henry's brother, Joshua Brumfield. From "The Brumfields" by Dr. Thelma Brumfield Dunn, one of Henry and Julia's grandaughters. Joshua's widow remarried and her new husband did not want the children. He kept the baby, who was still nursing, and the older son, who was able to help with the farm, but took the other four to Henry and Julia. A brother of Joshua's second wife claimed two of the children, and Henry & Julia Brumfield were now left with the last two. They took them in as if their own.
""Aspen Grove" "Rt. 604, near Renan, Owner: Mrs. Ben Brumfield" (This would have been Mary Acors, second wife of Benjamin Franklin Brumfield, his widow) "Tracing the ownership of Pitts.'s early homes would be a far easier task had more of them left diaries as did Jeremiah Graves, who built his home on Straightstone Creek between 1844 and 1846. He not only recorded valuable family history from 1822 on, including important events of the times, but described in detail the building of his house. It was to be two stories high, with three rooms including the basement, 20 feet square, one above the other; and with walls of brick burned on the place. This diary, which makes intensely interesting reading, is on microfilm at the Alderman Library, University of VA. Among the events recorded is a vivid description of the metoric shower which occurred on Nov. 13, 1833 'when the sky was ablaze with falling stars'. He also recorded that a neighbor hanged himself with a stocking and another slashed his wife's throat - 'very nearly killed her'." "Jeremiah Graves was born Aug. 8, 1801 the eldest sone of Jacob Graves (from the notes of Mrs. West Wooding, Long Island, VA and the diary of Jeremiah Graves) and his wife, Fannie White, daughter of Richard White of Orange Co., VA. In 1831 he married Catharine Boxley of Louisa Co. and came to Pitts. as an assistant to Philip Grassy in his store at Mt. Airy [approximately 6 miles from Aspen Grove/The Elms]. After his wife's leather in 1840, he married Nannie Richardson Hunt, daughter of Capt. John Hunt and his wife, Sallie Tate Brown Hunt of Glenland." "Jacob Graves inherited his father's home and remodeled it, adding several rooms of frame. In 1882 he traded plantations with Henry Anderson Brumfield (from 'Bright Leaf' by Mary Brumfield Garnett, Blacksburg, VA), who removed the frame addition and built the present brick section, changing the name to 'The Elms'." "Records show the Brumfields were in this county as early as 1803. Joshua, who married Susannah Keeling, was killed in the War of 1812. His son, Thomas Keeling Brumfield, and his wife, Saluda Mayhew Brumfield, were the parents of Henry A. Brumfield. In 1861 Henry and his two brothers and three stepbrothers volunteered in the Confederate Army. One brother was killed at the Battle of Seven Pines and another lost a limb in the battle. In 1865, Henry Brumfield married Julia Ann Craddock; they were the parents of eleven children. One son, Dr. William Brumfield, is credited with having chosen the name 'Renan' for the postoffice on his property [his house is the large, two-story, white house to the left of the now defunct Renan country store]. Dr. Brumfield was an avid reader and an admirer of the French philosopher, Joseph Ernest Renan." From "Pittsylvania County: Homes & People of the Past" by Madalene Vaden Fitzgerald, pg. 29. The ownership of "Aspen Grove/The Elms" passed from Mrs. Ben Brumfield/Mary Acors Brumfield to two daughters from her husband's first marriage to Josey Carr, who died of cancer - Mrs. Mabel Brumfield Tucker & Mrs. Edna Brumfield Owens of Chuckatuck, VA. They later sold it to a relative, Ben Brumfield of Texas who is in the process of restoring it. Both of these ladies have since passed, much to my sadness. Betty Anderson 2-19-2024
