Biography

Françoise was born in Port Royal, Acadie, around 1653.[1] She was the third daughter born to Vincent Brun and Renee Breau, and the first of their children to be born in the New World.

In 1671, at the age of 19, Françoise was married and had one child. She and her husband Bernard Bourg, a farmer, lived in Port Royal. They owned no cultivated land, but they had a few cattle and some sheep.[2]

In 1678, they had 8 beasts, 1 acre [sic], and five children.[3]

In 1686, at Port Royal, Françoise BRUN, aged 34, was living with her husband, Bernard BOURC [sic], aged 36, and eight children: Marie [recte Marie Claire], aged 15, Marguerite, aged 13, Rene, aged 9, Anne, aged 8, Jeanne, aged 6, Claire, aged 4, Francoise, aged 3, and Abraham, aged 1. They owned 1 gun and were living on 3 arpents of cultivable land with 4 cattle, 6 sheep and 6 hogs.[4]

They were found there again in the 1693 Census of Port Royal, Acadie. Bernard BOURG 41, Francois BRUN 40, Marguerite 19, Rene 17, Jeanne 15, Anne 13, Claire 13, Francoise 10, Abraham 8, Rene 4, Marie 3, Claire 1; 18 cattle, 20 sheep, 12 pigs, 30 arpents, 1 gun.[5]

Françoise and Bernard prospered in Port Royal. In 1698, after 28 years of marriage, they had 11 children, 35 arpents of land, 45 fruit trees, and plenty of livestock.[6]. They continued to live well in Port Royal though with somewhat less land 1700 Census of Port Royal. Bernard BOURG 48; Francoise BRUN (wife) 47; Rene 24; Abraham 13; Jeanne 22; Anne 20; Francoise 17; Marie 10; Clair 8; 24 cattle, 18 sheep, 30 arpents, 1 gun.[7] and in 1701 only the family was enumerated (no land or beasts shown) in the 1701 Census of Port Royal. Bernard BOURG 54, Francoise BRUN (wife) 50; Abraham 15, Jeanne 23, Francoise 18, Renee 13, Marie 1D, Claire 6.[8]

As their children fledged, the family size (and concommitantly land holdings) shrunk. As of the 1707 Census of Port Royal. they were: Bernard BOURG and his wife, 1 boy 14 or older, 3 girls less than 12; 8 arpents, 26 cattle, 30 sheep, 24 hogs, 2 guns.[9] and the 1714 Census of Port Royal. Bernard BOURG and wife, 1 son, 3 daughters.[10]

Françoise lived to the age of 75, outliving her husband, as well as two or three of her children. She died on 23 May 1725 having received the sacraments of penance, communion and extreme unction and was buried from the parish of St. Jean the Baptiste in Port Royal the next day, 24 May 1725.[11][12].
