Sarah Jane Bryant was born on 28 June 1771 in Wayne county, North Carolina. She married Wright Lancaster in 1789. She later married John Lowe Butler (1808-1860) in 1846 in Nauvoo, Illinois. She was a plural wife of Mormon John Butler. Her daughter Sarah also married him a month earlier. When the Butlers left for Utah in the Mormon migration, the elder Sarah decided she was too old and feeble to make the trip, and returned to Indiana, where she was living with her son William before she died in 1860, aged 88-89.[1]
