Biography

John Bryant was born at Scituate, Plymouth Colony, the 17th of August, 1644, to John Bryant and Mary Lewis.[1] He was baptized at the Second Church of Scituate on the 23rd of March, 1650, with three other siblings.[2]

He married Mary Battelle on 20 Mar 1677 . Mary Battelle was born at Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts 6 May 1650 daughter of Thomas Battelle and Mary Fisher.[3]

John and Mary were the parents of 3 children:

  1. John Bryant born 27 Mar 1678.
  2. David Bryant born 17 Aug 1684.
  3. Samuel Bryant born 15 Jan 1689. [4]

John Bryant died on 26 Jan 1707-08 at Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts .Mary Battelle died 2 Nov 1732 at Hanover, Plymouth, Massachusetts .[5]

His will is dated 6 March 1706/7 in Scituate and proved on 12 February 1707/8 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife Mary, and his children, John (oldest son), Jonathan, David, Joshua, Samuel, Mary and Martha. His inventory was taken on 26 January 1707/8.[6]

From the profile of his sister, Hannah, incorrectly placed:

"Dr. Percy Bryant recorded in 1894: Lieut. John2 Bryant (John,1 Sen.), married Mary. He was born in Scituate, Aug. 17, 1644, died there Jan. 26, 1708; will proved Feb. 12, 1708; inventory of estate £395. His children, born in Scituate, were: i. John,3 Jun., b. March 27, 1678; m. Deborah Barstow, Jan. 1, 1707. ii. Jonathan, b. Jan. 1, 1679; m. Elizabeth . iii. Mary, b. Sept. 3, 1682; m. Jabez Rose, May 6, 1707. iv. David, b. Aug. 17, 1684; m. Hannah Church. v. Joshua, b. Nov. 14, 1687; d. June 9, 1709. vi. Samuel, b. Jan. 15, 16S9; m. Abigail Turner, vii. Martha, b. Aug. 22, 1691."[7]

It appears that Bryant-750 and Bryant-187 are one and the same person. He had two wives. one was his first cousin Abigail Bryant-741 and the second was Mary Battelle-9. The marriage dates are about 12 years apart. Can we merge these?
