Biography

Cecil Bryant is Notable.

Florida Governor. He served as Governor of Florida from 1961 to 1965. A native of Marion County he received his law degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and returned to Florida where he served five consecutive terms in the state legislature. During his term as governor he emphasized education and conservation. Over one billion dollars was raised to erect new buildings on the state's college campuses. He focused on water control projects and obtaining land for recreational purposes. First elected to the Florida house in 1942, he soon resigned to serve in the US Navy during WWII where he was a gunnery and anti-submarine officer. After the war he was reelected to his seat in the house and served five terms until 1955, being selected speaker in 1953. He was elected governor as a Democrat running on a segregationist platform. In 1970 be made an unsuccessful bid for the US Senate and returned to Jacksonville to practice law.

In 1972 he joined with former Texas Gov. Connelly in "Democrats for Nixon" and helped secure Florida for the Republicans.
