Biography

In early 1804 (mid-winter) Simeon left Newton, Sussex Co., NJ with wife and two children (James Y. and Jacob) in oxen-drawn sleigh. After two weeks reached Ledyard, NY on the east shore of Cayuga Lake. Stayed there two years, renting cabin and land from a Baldwin, an old neighbor from NJ. In April 1806, left Ledyard in company of cousin James Currin (Corwin) in in a "derm" boat. Rowed, poled and roped down Cayuga Lake and up Clyde River and Mud Creek to near Hydesville by mid-May. Found suitable land just outside what is now Newark and purchased 150 ac. at $4/ac. at office of Phelps and Gorham in Geneva. James Currin (Corwin) helped clear land and build small cabin that first summer. Currin also returned to Ledyard for sleigh and oxen. The name was spelled "Briant" then. With his wife, in 1790-1800, moved from Morristown, NJ to Wayne County, NY, near Newark, where he homesteaded 150 acres. Wrote a journal covering the years 1800-1848. C. A. Bert Bryant, in 1945, sent it to Lynn T. Bryant in Newark, with the request that it be placed with the historical society there. (Part IV, pp 87-88). [Title: Another Man's Life; Author: Bryant, C. A. (Bert); Publication: 1937; Media: Manuscript]

The farm was inherited by sons James and Steven. Son Jacob went west to settle in Michigan.

Simeon listed locally as a veteran of the War of 1812.

Morris County Quit Claim Deed Q145 dated 16 Jun 1806, wherin Simeon Briant and Azubia his wife, of Sodus, County of Ontario, NY sold Simeon's share of his father Samuel's Randolph Twp. estate to brothers Elias and Jacob. (Randolph formerly Mendham Twp. - Arcadia Twp., site of Simeon's NY homestead, originally part of Sodus, Ontario Co.; Lyons formed in 1811 and Arcadia separated from Lyons in 1825).
