Biography

John (Capt.-Lt.) Bryant was born on May 19, 1742, in Boston, Massachusetts, his father, John, was 24 and his mother, Lois, was 18. He married Ann Cade and they had one daughter together. He then married Hannah Mason and they had nine children together. He died on May 1, 1816, in Springfield, Massachusetts, at the age of 73, and was buried there.

John Bryant, first Springfield, Massachusetts Armory superintendent in 1794. He had lost his right arm at the Battle of Stony Point in the Revolution, settled in at Springfield, Massachusetts where he was a storekeeper at the Armory, and in 1794 succeeded his daughter's ( Hannah Mason Bryant Hatch ) father- in-law (Hannah's maternal grandfather Colonel David Mason), who had been a Boston artillery officer in the Revolution and was assigned by George Washington to establish an armory. David Mason had located the Springfield site, hired skilled workers and oversaw construction of the first laboratory facilities which were the precursor to the Armory. John Bryant did manage the armory, well, through difficult years of many budget cuts, lack of funds, and manpower reductions in the aftermath of the US revolutionary war.

John Bryant and Hannah Mason announced their intention to marry on July 17, 1779, in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.[1] They were married on August 10, 1779, in either Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts[2] or West Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.[3]
