Kitay, M.D., associate dean for curricular affairs. The Hall Endowment, presented to the Medical Branch in 1979, offers opportunities for faculty members to improve the quality of teaching and learning. Funded projects may involve new teaching-learning modes, innovative instructional implementation and faculty development activities. The recipients of the recent awards and their projects include Stephen G. Bryant, Ph.D., faculty associate in psychiatry and Mary F. Schottstaedt, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, "Development Implementation and Evaluation of Self-instructional Units in Clinical Psychopharmacology."[6]

UTMB NOTES --- Researchers Receive Franke Award --- GALVESTON — Three researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch were honored with the Donald E. Franke Award by the Drug Information Association for an article they co-authored. "Detecting Drug Reactions in Postmarketing Surveillance: Interview Validity" was written by Seymour Fisher, Ph.D., professor and director, Center for Medication Monitoring, Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences; Stephen G Bryant, Pharm. D., associate professor, Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences; and Ronica M. Kluge M.D., professor, Internal Medicine. The article was chosen as the best article published in the Drug Information Journal during 1987 and recognized for authoritative excellence, significance and contribution to the literature and creative scholarship. The findings are part of a large-scale UTMB study conducted by the Center for Medication Monitoring that uses patient reports to monitor adverse reactions to prescription drugs. A toll-free number provided at pharmacies encourages patients to call the center with information. The article showed that spontaneous reports by patients were the most reliable source of adverse drug reactions. It was based on interview information from 231 outpatients who received an antibiotic or antidepressant with documented adverse effects.[7]

Citizens know nonsense when they see it --- Thank you, Galveston County Daily News, for publishing in your June 30 edition the letters regarding the $5 parking fee on Seawall Boulevard. What a delight to observe that the citizenry of Galveston recognizes nonsense when we see it! At once, the letters were amusing and quite telling. While I disagree that the members of our City Council are idiots (what would they say about us? We elected them), I submit that their actions on this parking fee issue is a clear indication that remedial education is needed sorely with regard to council members knowing their constituents. Stephen G. Bryant. Galveston.[9]
