Biography

Thomas Bryant, III (aka Bryan) was born July 12, 1688, in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia, a son of Thomas Bryan II, born in 1649 in Old Rapahannock County and the grandson of Thomas Bryan, Sr., an immigrant from Co. Clare, Ireland, during the English Civil War. Thomas Bryant III was granted 166 1/2 acres upon the head branches of Wickomoco and Coan Rivers, adjoining John Oldham, and Richard Rout. [1] On June 7, 1721, Thomas was appointed surveyor of the highway from Colonel Tarpley's property to the maine road by Mr Griffin's Old Field and from Colonel Tarpley's into the main road by Moratico Mill and ordered that he forthwith clear the same [land] according to Law. [2]

Thomas' first wife was Mary (?nee) by whom he had at least three children:

  1. Thomas Bryant, born about 1708 in North Farnham Parish, died March 1, 1742 in North Farnham Parish; he married Elizabeth Fowler.
  2. Mary Bryant, born circa 1710, in North Farnham Parish, died before 1772, in Orange county, Virginia, married Philip Bush, born 1700, the son of John Bush and Margaret Bruce.
  3. William Bryant, born March 14, 1715, in North Farnham Parish, died after 1743, in Orange county, Virginia, married Miss (Unknown) Smith.[3]

Thomas' first wife died before 1717, around 25 years old, leaving him with small children to raise. His eldest son may be the same Thomas "Bryan" (not proven) who was placed in the guardianship of Caron Brannon, recorded in the Richmond county Court on March 4, 1724.

About April 3, 1717, in North Farnham Parish, Virginia, Thomas Bryant II married secondly, Margaret Jeffries, born in 1697, in North Farnham Parish. She was the daughter of Edward Jeffries and Elizabeth Wilson. Note: This family surname is also spelled "Geffrys." Margaret's brother, John Geffrys, and her husband, "Thomas Bryant, the younger" made an indenture of five hundred acres of land situated in Richmond County, on April 8, 1717. Margaret's brother relinquished ownership in the land, and this presumably served as her dowry. [4] Thomas and Margaret became the parents of one known daughter:

  • Wilmoth Bryant, born before 1721, in North Farnham Parish, died after 1770, in North Farnham Parish, married Joshua Stone, Jr. on November 22, 1738, in North Farnham Parish. Joshua was born October 26, 1716, in North Farnham Parish, a son of Joshua and Mary Stone.

Thomas Bryant died February 10, 1726, in North Farnham Parish. On June 7, 1721, in Richmond county, Court, "Wilmott Bryan" was placed in the guardianship of "Thomas Bryan" as acknowledged by Thomas (doubtful this was her half-brother, who had not reached the age of majority) and Thomas Nash. [5]
