Biography

Burial: Bryant Cemetery, Putnam County, Tennessee, USA [1]

From Charlene Oliver Williams--2nd gr. granddaughter of Howell and Nancy.

Kentucky Marriages, 1802-1850 about Howell Bryant and Nancy Jones

Groom: Howell Bryant
Bride: Nancy Jones
Marriage Date: 7 Feb 1822
Marriage Location: Kentucky, Whitley County

A proven descendant of Absalom Bryant has been tested for Y-DNA by FamilyTree DNA. The results show close matches with the following:

1. A descendant of James Morgan Bryant b. about 1845. This James married Eliza J. Robertson and lived in Whitley county in 1870. Civil War Pension application papers for James Morgan Bryant show James' father to be Morgan Bryant.

2. A descendant of John Bryant b. about 1847. This John married Amy Cox, a granddaughter of the Absalom Bryant mentioned above. (Absalom’s daughter, Elizabeth, married Stephen Cox and were parents of Amy Cox). Civil War Pension application papers for James Morgan Bryant show John's father to be Morgan Bryant.

3. A descendant of Howell H. Bryant from Putnam County Tennessee. This Howell is believed to be the son of Peter and brother of the Absalom Bryant mentioned above.

4 . A descendant of John Bryant b. about 1790 who was born in Tennessee and is believed to have lived in Kentucky and Indiana. He married Elizabeth and his widow and descendants ended up in Pulaski County, Missouri in 1850. The father of this John Bryant is unknown.

5. A second test was performed for a descendant of Morgan Bryant b. about 1807. The DNA does match that of Absalom, supporting the theory that Absalom and Morgan are brothers.

In summary, DNA results support the theory that Howell H., Morgan and Absalom are all brothers. It is not known at this time how John Bryant b abt 1790 fits in (see #4 above).

1830 Census in Jackson, AL: I'm not sure that this is Howell but it looks like a bad transciption (Harrell) to me and it could be Howell. Also , all census records say that Howell's first son Daniel (by Elizabeth?) was born in Alabama. Several other people in Jackson, Alabama have connections to Whitley Co., KY namely Jesse Bryant whose father David died in Jackson Co., Alabama and Jesse was in Whitley Co. KY in 1830.

There is no reason to believe that Howell's first wife is named Nancy ELIZABETH Jones. This is obviously an attempt to combine two different wives into one. The first wife should be Nancy Jones and the second wife is Elizabeth. In 1850, Nancy is in Whitley County, KY under her maiden name Jones living with her two sons Andrew Jackson and Marion while Elizabeth is in Jackson County TN living with Howell.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Howell by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Howell:

Howell Bryant's 1st wife was a Nancy Jones. I think people have combined 2 wives into one name by using Nancy Elizabeth Jones. We do know his first wife was Nancy Jones of Whitley Co., KY and his second wife was an Elizabeth and they lived in Putnam Co., TN. Is there any proof that 2nd wife was a Jones?
