John Brydges, 1st Baron Chandos of Sudeley was born on 9 March 1491/92 at Coberley, Gloucestershire, England. His last name was sometimes spelled Brugge or Bruges. He was baptised on 9 March 1491/92 at Coberley, Gloucestershire, England. He was the son of Sir Giles Brugge, 6th Lord Chaundos and Isabel Baynham. His date of birth is apparently known from his father's Inquisition Post Mortem, taken in 1511, however the only accessible internet version is a summary that states that John was aged 10 and more at the time. [1] In 1512 his wardship was granted to Sir Edward Darrell. [2]
He succeeded to the title of 7th Lord Chaundos [E., 1337] on 1 December 1511, de jure. [2]
John fought in the French Wars, at Therouenne and Tournay and was invested as a Knight in 1513. He fought in the Battle of the Spurs on 16 August 1513. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Gloucestershire between 1529 and 1536 as well as the office of Ranger of Whychwood Forest in 1536. He held the office of Keeper of Langley Manor in 1536 and the office of Constable of Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire in 1538. He was a Groom of the Privy Chamber in 1539. He held the office of Deputy Governor of Boulogne and was Sheriff of Gloucestershire from 1549 to 1550. He obtained a grant from Queen Anne the grant of Castle and manor of Sudeley, after being instrumental in suppressing Wyatt's rebellion. He held the office of Lieutenant of the Tower of London between August 1553 and June 1554.[2]
John was created 1st Baron Chandos of Sudeley, co. Gloucester [England] on 8 April 1554.1 On 12 April 1554, only a few days later, he assisted Lady Jane Grey to the scaffold. [3]
John married Elizabeth, daughter of Edmund Grey, 9th Lord Grey (of Wilton) and Florence Hastinges, in 1512 at Wilton on Wye, Herefordshire, England. Their children included:
He died on 12 April 1557 at age 65 at Sudeley Castle, Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, England and was buried there on 3 May 1557. His last will was dated 2 March 1555/56 and was proven (by probate) on 28 May 1557. [4]
