Biography

Walter was born about 1443, the son of Patrick Buchanan, 13th of Buchanan and Jonet Cunningham. He married Isabella Graham and they were the parents of:

  • Patrick 16th of Buchanan
  • John, 1st of Arnpryor, "King of Kippen"
  • Maurice
  • Walter, 1st of Spittal
  • Margaret who married Alexander Graham, 2nd Earl of Menteith
  • Elizabeth who married Sir William Stirling of Cadder

14th – Walter Buchanan,[74][75] (Guthrie Smith identifies him as 8th Chief and Buchanan of Auchmar identifies him as 15th Chief) married Isobel Graham and by her four sons (Patrick [Guthrie Smith identifies him as 9th Chief but then goes on to advise that the Chiefship passed from Patrick's father to Patrick's son[76] and Buchanan of Auchmar identifies him as 16th Chief[75] ] who married the daughter of the Earl of Argyle and by her had George who succeeded his grandfather; John first ancestor of cadets of Arnprior; Maurice; and Walter first ancestor of cadets of Spittal) and two daughters (Margaret and Elizabeth).[1]

In A Historical and Genealogical Essay upon the Family and Surname of Buchanan it is claimed that Walter married the lord Graham's daughter, whose mother was the earl of Angus's daughter. [2] This offers no proof and indeed the dates do not accord with Isabella being of the Graham of Kincardine family. All evidence points to Isabella being the daughter of Malise Graham, 1st Earl of Menteith, (see the court cases below which show that Malise granted a charter of Sasine to Walter most probably as Isabella's tocher.)

In 1463 Walter Buchanan and his spouse Isabell were granted at Edinburgh of 26 Nov 1463 lands of Kirkmichael in Dumbartonshire and Cameron in Stirlingshire. Source: [3]

On 28 Feb 1464 Walter Buchanan and his spouse Isabell also had a Royal Charter of the lands of Strathyre in the earldom of Strathearn which his father had earlier resigned into the hands of the late Queen Mary the king's mother.[4]]

In neither charter in 1463 and 1454 is Isabell's surname given.

Walter raised an action in 1496 against Donald Campbell and his son Sir Duncan for the illegal occupation of the lands of Finnart in the Sheriffdom of Dumbarton.[5]

On 4 Feb 1499/1500 the King's Advocate and Walter Buchanan of that Ilk brought an action before the Lords of Council against William Stewart of Baldoran and others for the spoilation of the mails of the lands of Strathyre.[6]

Alexander Graham, earl of Menteith failed to appear before the Lords of Council in November 1500 to answer charges that he had withheld from Walter Buchanan of that Ilk the profits of the lands of Cawnaght. [7]In continuation of the foregoing action on 2 Dec 1500, before the Lords of Council, Walter Buchanan of that Ilk produced as evidence a charter and instrument of sasine granted to him under the seal of Malise earl of Menteith.

Agreed, Fann Fann the citations for the profile were very weak - would say inventions. I have added a fair number of proper sources and these show that Walter wife Isabella was very probably a daughter of Malise Graham earl of Menteith.

"Patrick's son, Walter [ca. 1443 - 1526], married a daughter of Lord Graham, and by her had a younger son[Patrick?], who became known in the time of James V as the facetious King of Kippen. Patrick [ca. 1458-1513], who fell at Flodden, by his wife, a daughter of Argyll, left two [only two?] sons - George, Sheriff of Dumbarton in 1561, and Walter, founder of the line of Spittal."

[Date/data added for clarity in the cited narrative.]

As with the note from this same source on his mother's page (the same citation applies), this at least provides some continuity and face validity to the line. Nevertheless, the anonymous 1800s work is unsourced - at least to the naked eye, and was a coffee table book for popular amusement. Some indications suggest that it was republished twice.

The most rigorous work on Buchanan located to date appears to conclude that Patrick Buchanan's wife was unknown. See: G2G: Very thin citations on pre-1500 profile, but we have a Buchanan lead.
