Thomas Buchanan of Ardoch was a hat manufacturer (Ardoch Hats) and merchant in Glasgow, trading hats for West Indian rum and molasses.
succeeded his father as "of Ardoch" after 1774. (note : there are several estates named "Ardoch" - one in Braco, Perthshire; one in Cardross, near Dumbarton; one in Glasgow = need to better identify this estate.)
1775 became a partner in the Glasgow Ship Bank (prev. Moore, Carrick & Co.)
In 1776, he bought half the lands in Birdston (Campsie) from his wife Helen Graham and her sisters; later sold in 1782 to John Gray of New York.
In 1784, he acquired the lands of Dalmarnock from his brother-in-law John Gray, and built Dalmarnock House, Glasgow [1]
