Biography

This profile is part of the Buckingham Name Study.

Hosmer's parents, Nathan Buckingham and Constant Tiffany, married in 1745 in Connecticut.[1]

Hosmer Buckingham was born in 1761 in Middlesex Co., Connecticut, New England.[2]

He married Lilly Snow in 1790.[3] and their son Richard Buckingham was born on October 21, 1797.

Lilly Snow married Hosmer Buckingham, b: 1761, in Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut, in 1790, shortly before the 1st US Federal Census was taken.

On the 1790 US Federal Census, taken August 1, 1790, Hosmer "Birkingham" [sic=Buckingham] is listed as living in Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut. He is a "Head of Household," age between 30-40, married with no children. This shows that he and Lilly Snow, aged between 20 - 30 in 1790, had married before August 1, 1790.[4]

Ten years later, on the 1800 US Census, Hosmer Buckingham is still reported as living in Saybrook, Middlesex Co., Connecticut. He is now a "Head of Household" consisting of himself, his wife, and 4 children: 2 boys under 5 years old and 2 girls between 5 & 10 years old. These were:[5][6]

  1. Ann Snow BUCKINGHAM b: 8 JUN 1792 in Saybrook, CT
  2. Mary BUCKINGHAM b: 14 NOV 1793 in Saybrook, CT
  3. Richard BUCKINGHAM b: 21 OCT 1797 in Saybrook, CT
  4. Hosmer BUCKINGHAM b: 25 MAR 1800 in Saybrook, CT

Between 1800 and 1820, the couple had these 3 additional children:[7]

  1. Hiram BUCKINGHAM b: 30 JUN 1806, Killingworth, Middlesex CT
  2. Aaron BUCKINGHAM b: 21 NOV 1810, Killingworth, Middlesex CT
  3. Arabella BUCKINGHAM b: ABT 1812, Killingworth, Middlesex CT

The 1810 Census report misspells Hosmer's name as "Hamer" Buckingham. It shows the same family is now living in Killingworth, Middlesex Co., Connecticut.[8]

Ten years later, "Lilley" (Snow) Buckingham was a widow. She was now listed on the 1820 US Census as a "Head of Household," living in Saybrook, Middlesex Co., Connecticut. She had 2 sons living with her (Hiram & Aaron) and 4 women, including 2 girls under 5 years old (granddaughters?). Her household included 3 adults. Living next door was an "Ebenezer Snow," possibly her father; his household had 2 adults, and 7 girls (one could be a teen-age domestic). Unfortunately, until 1850, the US Census reports did not include names except for the "Head of Houshold".[9]
