Biography

Daniel Buckingham immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
This profile is part of the Buckingham Name Study.

Daniel was born to Thomas Buckingham and Hannah Buckingham in August of 1636 in England. [1]

He arrived as an infant with his family in Boston on July 31, 1637, from England. A year later they sailed to what is now New Haven and held their first religious service under an oak tree on Sunday, April 25, 1638, with the founding settlers of that community. [2][3]

On August 22, 1639, The First Church of Christ in Milford was organized in New Haven by The Reverend Peter Prudden and a company of fifteen families.[2]Thomas was listed under the head of "Names of Planters and Division of Land according to Estate and Heads in Families," in 1643 (Robert Charles Anderson has determined that this list dates from between 29 October 1640 and 22 November 1640) with four persons in his family and an estate of £60. (New Haven Town Records, Vol. 1, page 18)[4]

Thomas was granted land and built a home on lot 36 where he raised his family. [5] This site was occupied by the Buckingham family from 1639, when the land was set out to Thomas Buckingham, until the late-19th century. Supposedly the frame and stack date from the 17th century, but this may not have been the first house on the site. [6] The Buckingham House (61 North Street) was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Here is what the home looks like today.

Thomas died in 1657 when Daniel was twenty-one years old.[7] Daniel admitted to the communion of the church, March 28, 1665.[8]

First Meeting House.

On June 4, 1667, Daniel was named a ruling Elder of the first Church of Milford and held the position until his death in 1712. He was the last person to serve in that role.[3][8]

He was named the executor of Ann Buckingham's (step-mother) estate in 1686 along with his brother Samuel. Both of them were also bequeathed land from her estate.[5]Appendix - Note A

On September 29, 1674 it was agreed that "Major Treat, Elder Buckingham, Lieut. Fowler and Thomas Hays" would build a mill for the town.[9]

He is in the court records as Sargent Daniel Buckingham in 1673.[10]

This Court appoynts Mr. Georg Clark and Sargt. Daniel Buckingham to lay out to Mr. Fenn his grant of land granted to him by this court, according to his grant.

On September 26, 1681 he was named as overseer of the estate of Thomas Sanford of Milford. This is included by Anderson in Thomas Sanford biographical sketch.[11]

"the honored Major Robert Treat & Mr. Daniell Buckingham & Samuel Eells to be overseers".

"On December 7, 1702, the town ordered Robert Treat, Elder Buckingham, Lieutenant Fowler, and Thomas Hays to erect a gristmill near their fulling mill, and to provide two sets of stones, one for English, and one for Indian grain, also a "good boult" so that the men of the town could bolt their own flour. They selected a site at the rear of the town house, on the bank of the river."[9]

In 1708 he is involved in the court with the settlement of Samuel Newton's will where he was named executor along with Joseph Treat.[12]

Marriages

Daniel married Hannah Fowler in Milford on November 21, 1661[13].

Daniel married a second time to Alice Newton in 1689. [14]

  2. Daniel b. Jan 30, 1665[16]
  3. Esther b. 1667 died in infancy
  4. Mary b. 1668[17]
  5. Thomas b. 1670 [18]
  6. John b. 1673[19]
  7. Gideon b. 1675[20]
  8. Josiah b. 1677 [21]

His gravestone inscription:

He is buried in Milford cemetery. [23]

Will and Probate

Daniel's will was probated in May of 1712. In it he names his wife Alice, sons Thomas, Gideon and Josiah and his daughter Hannah. He also names grandsons Benjamin (son of John who died in 1703) and Bethuel Langstaff (son of Hannah). Thomas and Gideon were appointed Executors. You can read this transcription here. [24]

Research Notes

Daniel married first to Hannah Fowler in 1661. She was the daughter of William Fowler and Mary Tapp. In The Buckingham Family: Or, The Descendants of Thomas Buckingham, One of the First Settlers of Milford, Conn on page 11, Chapman states that Hannah died in 1667.[5] This has been disproved. Hannah was made a full member of the Milford church on May 4, 1673. She is listed as the wife of Sergt. Daniell Buckingham.[25]

Daniel's second wife, Alice was born to Roger Newton and Mary Hooker and was baptized in 1664 and married Daniel in 1689 at the age of 25. Alice Newton was too young to be the mother of Mary, Thomas, John, Gideon, Josiah and Esther who were all born before Daniel and Alice were married.[26]

Hannah Fowler was the mother of all the Buckingham children. She died after the birth of her last child in 1677 and before Daniel's remarriage to Alice Newton in 1689.
