Biography

William Buckingham worked as a butcher.[1]

He was a widower by March 1807.[2]

William married Martha Higgins, his second wife on 5 April 1807, in St Mary's Church, North Marston.[2]

William and Martha had 12 children, all baptised in St Mary's, North Marston:

  1. Matilda (b. 1808)
  2. William (b. 1809)
  3. Robert (b. 1811)
  4. George (b. 1812 d. 1814)
  5. Mark (b. 1814 d. 1823)
  6. Ann (b. 1816)
  7. Joseph (b. 1818)
  8. Matthew (b. 1819)
  9. Thomas (b. 1820)
  10. Richard (b. 1823)
  11. George (b. 1824)
  12. Mark (b. 1828)

William predeceased his wife Martha by over two decades. He was probably the William Buckingham buried in North Marston on 13 October 1836.[3]

Research Notes

  1. Estimated date of birth is based on an assumption that he was born and baptised in North Marston, and that the burial identified for him is correct. This would identify him as the William Buckingham born to William Buckingham and Ann Franklin and baptised in St Mary's Church, North Marston on 2 February 1768 or 1769 (sources conflict as to the year).[4][5]
  2. The last unsourced vestige of the GEDCOM import which created this profile is the suggestion that his first wife was named Susanna. Research has turned up some evidence that this at least was correct:
    • A Susanna Buckingham, 'wife of Wm Buckingham', was buried in North Marston on 25 September 1806;[6]
    • A John Buckingham, son of William & Susanna was baptised in North Marston on 15 May 1794.[7] He has a profile already on WT, with no parents identified, and evidence of another conflated tangle after GEDCOM import: John Buckingham (abt.1794-). Initial research suggests this John may have also been a butcher, which is a little more circumstantial evidence that the William of this profile was his father.

Previously conflated profiles now resolved

As of 5 October 2023 this profile was an unfortunate conflation of four (or more) different individuals.

  • WB1: The William Buckingham who was married to Martha Higgins, his second wife, in North Marston on 5 April 1807.

This profile has been edited to represent just WB1, following creation of new profiles for the other conflated individuals WB2, WB3 and WB4.

  • WB2: The William Buckingham who was born to Samuel Buckingham and Maria Green in North Marston, baptised there on 16 June 1787. WB2 has now been created as William Buckingham (1787 - 1787), and Samuel Buckingham and Maria Green linked as parents to the new profile and unlinked from this profile. This has also removed the spurious links to siblings of WB2 from this profile. There are no other vestiges of WB2 remaining on this profile.
  • WB3: The William Buckingham to whom the death date and location formerly shown in this profile are associated. WB3 has now been created as William Buckingham (c.1788 - 1866). Details pertaining to him now deleted from this profile.
  • WB4: The William Buckingham who was the father of Ann Marsh (née Buckingham) and Emma Buckingham. WB4 has now been created as William Buckingham (c.1787 - c.1865). Details pertaining to him now deleted from this profile.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Please see the analysis added to the Research Notes, and consider whether you have any evidence to cast doubt on any of it.

If not, I propose to amend this profile to document the first of the William Buckinghams listed in the Research Notes, because at least the marriage and most of the children are correct for this William. I will then create (or identify existing) profiles for the other three William Buckinghams, transfer data and sources from this profile to the relevant new profile and add sources for the additional evidence I have, then delete from this profile everything which does not pertain to the first William.
