George’s birth was registered during the period of April-June 1877,
[1]
the son of James Buckingham and Fanny Carter of Oxfordshire, England. Subsequent census records are consistent with the date but list slightly different places of birth, Chipping Norton and Salford.
The April 1881 census of England shows him living with his parents in Salford
[2]
while the April 1891 census gives the residence as Chipping Norton.
[3]
The latter gives his occupation as a worker in a tweed mill, but, of course, this is merely childhood employment.
During the period July 1903 to September 1903, George’s marriage to Eleanor Harris was registered as occurring in Chipping Norton.
[4]
This date is consistent with that given in the subsequent 1911 census which shows them living at 21 Spring Street in Chipping Norton, along with two children, his father and his brother, John.
[5]
Like most of the other male Buckinghams in Oxfordshire, George’s adult occupation was a stonemason.
