MRS. JAMES THORNTON.

The death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. James, Lucan Street, Nimmitabel, on Saturday, 12th inst, following a lengthy illness, of Mary Ellen, wife of Mr. James Thornton, of 'Willow View,' Nimmitabel, at the age of 71 years.

She was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Buckley, of Myalla, where she was born, and where she was later married to Mr. John James Manning, who predeceased her 39 years ago, and by whom she leaves one son, John (Goulburn) and four daughters, Mrs. S. James (Catherine), Nimmitabel; Mrs. B. Freebody (Vivian), Guningar; Mrs. a James (Mary), Goulburn), and Julia (Newcastle). Later, at Bombala, she married Mr. James Thornton, of 'Willow Tree,' Nimmitabel, who survives her, also two sons, Stanley (Braidwood), Buckley (Goulburn); two daughters; Mrs. E. Owens (Ann), Ulamambri;' Mrs. W. McMahon (Maria), Nimmitabel; ' one brother, Charles (Queanbeyan); and two sisters, Mrs. J. Burke (El!en; Nimmitabel), and Mrs. W. Bourke (Catherine, Canberra) and 28 grand children. Nine brothers and a sister predeceased her. The late Mrs. Thornton has always been very active in assisting the Sick or those In trouble. She was a devoted member of the R.C. faith and a good worker for the church. She was always devoted to her family, and in her latter years, when her health was failing, she has been living with her daughter, Mrs. S. James, who with all other members of the family, including a niece, Miss Daphne Burke, who was very attached to her, staying at her side all through her last Illness, gave her every possible loving care and attention. She was attended in her last illness by Rev. Fr. D. J. Griffin and the sisters of St. Joseph, Nimmitabel. Following Requiem Mass early on Sunday morning, the funeral left St. Andrew's R. C. Church, Nimmitabel, on Sunday afternoon, 13th inst., for Nimmitabel General Cemetery, in the R.C. section of which the mortal remains of the deceased were laid to rest in the presence of a large gathering of mourners. Rev. Fr. Griffin officiated at both church and graveside and John, Stanley and Buckley (sons), Richard James, William McMahon and Ed ward Owers (sons-in-law) were pall bearers.
