Article - The Age (Melbourne, Vic. : 1854 - 1954) Wednesday 21 May 1913 - Page 15: Practically every inhabitant of a terrace of houses in Clarendon-street, South Melbourne, was called at the local court on Monday as a witness in connection with a neighbors' disturbance that took place on Sunday morning, 14th May. Wm. Henry Turner, of 204 Clarendon-street, was proceeding against Matthew Howat and Laura Howat for unlawful assault, and Matthew Howat was retaliating with a cross summons against Turner for a similar offence. Turner deposed that he was working in the yard, which was used by several neighbors, when Howat came out and accused him of cutting a clothes line. Witness replied that he had no time to cut clothes lines. The defendant then called him an old woman, and witness replied, "You're a man." He turned to go away, when Howat gave him a blow. Witness thought he wouldn't be a coward, so he fought him, and they both fell. Mrs. Howat then came up with a broom, and dealt him several blows on the head and body. His brother ran out and took the broom away, but she deliberately got another one and struck him again. He tried to get Mrs. Howat to allow them to fight "fair." He was cut about the face, and had some terrible bruises on the neck from the broom. Afterwards witness went round to the lane, and struck Howat again. Mr. Ridgeway (for the Howats): Yes; and the missus was hanging to us, too. (Laughter.) Aren't you a nuisance to the women who hang clothes up in the yard?— No. Didn't Howat say to you, "You're an old woman. You're always putting your bib in about the lines"?— No. Didn't Mrs. Howat strike her husband just as much as you, because she objected to a fight taking place on Sunday?— No, because i was banged terrible. Mr. Dunbar, J.P. ; Did you get the worst of it? Witness (with glistening eyes): I'd like to fight him now, if he would only fight fair. (Laughter.) Mr. Dunbar; Not here, thanks. Elvie May Bligh gave evidence for the complainant. She admitted that she liked to see a fight occasionally, but denied that she fomented strife amongst the neighbors. The Howats' defence was that there was an argument about the clothes line, and the complainant, remarking, "I'm a better man than you," aimed a blow at Matthew Howat. "I dodged it," said Howat, "and got one in. The wife came out and struck us both with a broom, but when I got his head in chancery I let him have it." (Laughter.) Turner and Matthew Howat were each fined L1, and the ease against Laura Howat was dismissed.
