Biography

Abraham Buckley was probably born in early 1702 and was baptised on 26 Apr 1702 at St Mary, Oldham, Lancashire, the only son of Abraham Buckley and Jane (Leach) Buckley.

His father had died 4 or 5 months before his birth and he was raised by his widowed mother in a family that probably included three sisters: Mary 8 years older, Jane 7 years older and Judith 2 years older.

He married Mary Bamford on 23 Sep 1722 at St Chad, Rochdale, Lancashire when they were both 20 years old. After their marriage, they lived at Milnrow, about 2 miles from the middle of Rochedale.

Mary Buckley died in May 1737, probably in childbirth with Abigail or soon after. She was buried on 1 June 1737 at Holy Trinity, Shaw, Lancashire. The burial record has "Mary Buckley wife of Abraham Buckley of Rees croft" - this Rees Croft location is not known, but other records have it as Rees Croft, Crompton.

The next entry in the Holy Trinity burial register is for 4 July 1737 - "A littel Childe of Abraham Buckleys" and this is presumably the infant Abigail.

Abraham married his second wife Elizabeth (Betty) Fitton on 22 April 1743 at Prestwich, Lancashire
