Biography

Named in the wills of both his father[1] and mother,[2] he seems to have inherited Pleasants farm in Cumnor, Berks. that his mother lived on in her widowhood. He got the most consideration in her will, so most likely she lived with his family in her later years. His two brothers, John Buckner of Botley and William Buckner of Chawley seem to have been set up on their own properties at an earlier date, so presumably he was the youngest son surviving by the date of his mother's will. He is probably the same Richard Buckner who married Matilda Croke or Caner (variant readings) in Cumnor parish in 1575. A second marriage of Richard Buckner to an Eleanor (no surname) is recorded in the same parish in 1578, and a Matilda Buckner was buried in the parish on 2 Jan 1577 (OS) so she probably died and Eleanor was a second marriage. (No other Richard Buckner is known to be living in the area at the time.) They had a number of children known from Cumnor parish christenings as well as his mother's 1586 will, which names Richard's sons William, John, and Thomas as legatees. These would be consistent with the Cumnor christenings of William (1575), John (1578), and Thomas (1580), which given the identical names and consistent order, leaves little doubt as to their identities. One more son, Hugh, was born in 1589 after Dorothy's decease.

No record of his death is known, and after the birth of his last daughter Elizabeth in Cumnor in 1594, little has been ascertained of any members of this family. The similarity of his children's names to the children of his two brothers and numerous cousins among the Whitley Buckners, however, makes it difficult to distinguish them from one another.

Known children with christening years (from Cumnor parish christenings):

  1. William (1576)
  2. John (1578)
  3. Thomas (1580)
  4. Lettice (1582)
  5. Dorothy (1585)
  6. Joan (1587)
  7. Hugh (1589)
  8. Alice (1591)
  9. Elizabeth (1594)

This was probably one of the fictitious people that Jim White invented in his Buckner book, but I reused it for Richard the son of William Buckner of Botley who was probably born in the 1530s-40s.
