Note: The DAR record for Richard Buckner m Elizabeth Aylett has a note that "future applicants must prove correct service" because "the man by this name was appointed Major in 1778. This man died 1777."[1] Even this date is probably much too late, as his estate was probated in 1773. It's flatly impossible that he could have served in the Revolution.

Biography

Richard Buckner's birth year is unknown, though since he was a coexecutor of his father's 1733 will, he was certainly born before 1712 and likely earlier. Court records dealing with his estate first appear in Caroline Co. in October and November of 1773,[2] so he probably died in September or October of that year. His will was proved by John Tennent and Nathaniel Washington, with John Buckner, one of the executors, receiving the probate certificate. It's actually interesting that John Buckner was an executor, since Richard didn't have any known sons named John. His brother John was still alive though, so it's possible that's who this was. Several court orders soon after that date mention that Richard was a resident of Drysdale Parish and that he had land in Fauquier County.

Richard and his wife Elizabeth were sued in the Caroline Co. chancery court in 1755 by Elizabeth's coheirs (including Phillip Buckner and his wife Jane (Aylett) Buckner) and were ordered to make a 6 way division of some slaves (apparently from William Aylett's will).[3]

  • Sheriff
  • Justice in the Caroline Court
  • landowner in Westmoreland
  • m. Elizabeth Aylett[1]
  • children:
    • Aylett Buckner (m. Thornton).[4] Aylett, born 1745 in Caroline County, married in 1779 the daughter of Anthony and Sarah (Taliafero) Thornton, Judith Presley Thornton. Their daughter, Elizabeth Aylett Buckner, born September 5, 1787, married Isaac B. Gibbons in 1828. Isaac and Elizabeth died in Marion County, Missouri. Aylett died in Green County, Kentucky in 1809 (Judith died in 1800).[5] Aylett is also a Patriot Ancestor, #A016567.[6]
    • Francis Buckner (m. Upshaw).[4] Francis, born June 5, 1758 in Caroline County, married Martha Upshaw of Caroline County. Their daughter, Mary Amis Buckner, married John Pearce Campbell in Christian County, Kentucky on May 5, 1817. Francis and Martha died in Christian County, on June 30, 1819 and August 6, 1843, respectively.[7]

Crozier and derivative sources list another son, Richard (III)[4] viz. Richard, born 1749 at Hazel Grove, Caroline County, Virginia, married Judith Edmonds on February 27, 1772. Primary sources contradict this idea, though it is unclear if there was a real son named Richard who was mistakenly conflated with another Richard Buckner by Crozier and others.

An independent, though very late source, a Kentucky Explorer article lists "A daughter, married Gen. Stephens; a son, Aylett; and a son, Francis." This source is somewhat confused in many respects, though the omission of Richard from the list of children might suggest that Crozier's list is erroneous in that respect. It is also worth noting that Crozier gives birth years of 1745 (p. 35) and 1747 (p. 37) for Aylett and Francis, but none for Richard, suggesting that Crozier assembled the list from multiple sources.

Note on Locations

DAR records for son Aylett conflict on where he was born, with one showing Caroline County & one Prince William County (both 1745). Caroline County was formed from Essex, King & Queen, and King William counties in 1728. In 1730/31, Prince William County was formed from King George and Stafford counties. They are not adjacent counties, although King George and Caroline counties are.[8] Further documentation is needed to confirm which, if either, is correct. Given the extreme sparsity of birth location sources for that period though, it is unlikely that any of these locations are anything more than guesses. Essex Co. VA (modern Caroline Co.) is fairly likely give that Richard Buckner Sr. spent most of his life there, but documentation is probably lacking.

Buckner-847 and Buckner-168 appear to represent the same person because: This is my direct ancestor. He is the son of Richard Buckner and Elizabeth Cooke (d/o Mordecai Cooke of Gloucester). I am descended from his son Richard. This Richard m. Elizabeth Aylett, aunt of Ann Aylett Washington, half-sister-in-law of Pres. George Washington.
