Biography

James is hard to figure out because he died fairly young (around 38), but he married Sarah Rose in Carter Co., Kentucky in 1841 (or 42). They seem to have had 9 children (8 daughters and 1 son), and then he died around 1860, apparently not long after the 1860 census, when he was living in Lewis Co.^[1] Sarah remarried to Jesse Rice in 1864. In 1850, they were living in Greenup Co. KY, but their daughter Amanda S. Buckner was born in Indiana around 1851, so they may have lived there for a while. Several of their children were born in Carter Co. in the 1850s, so they probably lived in Carter for a time (where many of James' relatives resided).

Their known children (from county birth records and censuses) were:

• Mary E. Buckner (dau., b.ca. 1846 or less likely 1841^[2])
• Sarah Ellen Buckner (dau., b.ca. 1848)
• N.B. Buckner (dau., b.ca. 1849, probably died young)
• Amanda S. Buckner (dau., b.ca. 1851 in Indiana)
• Overton Buckner (son, 1853^[3]-1853, probably named after James' brother)
• Malinda F. Buckner (dau., b. 1855^[4])
• Martha A. Buckner (dau., b.1857^[5])
• Matilda J. Buckner (dau., b.ca. 1859)
• Lydia M. Buckner (dau., b.ca. 1860)

His parents were Patrick "Mack" Buckner and Sarah Gilliam, and he was born in Virginia, probably Scott Co., where his family lived until the late 1820s. He apparently had a sister named Jane who was around the same age, so they may have been twins. James only had one son as far as is known, but it is worth noting that he named his son Overton, while his brother Overton Buckner named his first son James.
