John was born about 1832 in Sevier County, Tennessee [1] to John Buckner and the former Rachel Lindsey. The family moved from Tennessee to Blount County, Alabama about 1835[2] .
John married Nancy M. Foster in Blount County, Tennessee on February 1, 1855 [3]. By the 1860 census, John and Nancy had moved to Fayette County, Alabama where they were enumerated with three children: Mary Jane, William Rufus and Sarah [4].
John enlisted in the Alabama 41st Infantry on June 30, 1862. When he and his unit were in Charleston, Bradley, Tennessee, he became ill and died [5]. His burial site has not been located. It is not known if his body was returned to Fayette County or if he was buried in Tennessee.
