Aylett was born in 1745, probably in Caroline County, Virginia, though the place is not known certainly.[1] He is recognized by the DAR as qualifying patriot ancestor.[2]
He lived in Fauquier County, Virginia during early adulthood and then moved to Green County, Kentucky, where a number of his relatives lived. He died there around 1811. His will is extant (written in 1809), naming children:[3]
Thornton Buckner,
Caty T. Taylor, wife of John Young Taylor,
Louisa Buckner, wife of Horace Buckner
Richard A. Buckner
Elizabeth Buckner (later married a Gibbons)
John Buckner (minor in 1809)
Richard A. Buckner became a noted judge and Congressman from Kentucky.
Research Notes
Due to the great affection Buckner men apparently had for Aylett women, there are a shocking number of Aylett Buckners to be found in late 18th and 19th century records, and they can be easily confused. The Aylett Buckner who served in the War of 1812[4] is certainly a different one, most likely Aylett Hartswell Buckner, since the present Aylett Buckner would have been 67 years old by 1812 and was most likely dead already.
