John was born in North Carolina around 1790-95 and moved to Cocke Co. Tennessee sometime before 1830. In the 1830 census, he was enumerated next to a James Buckner who was considerably older, born between 1760 and 1770.[1][2][3][4][5] This James Buckner is perhaps identical to James Buckner, the son of Henry Buckner. John was probably the same John Buckner who was received into the Slate Creek Baptist Church in Cocke County in May 1831.[6]
He is probably the same John Buckner who witnessed a 1856 deed in Cocke County.[7]
His widow Rachel (b. ca. 1802, North Carolina) appears in the 1880 census, so he must have died between 1870 and 1880.[8] They had been married at least since the 1850 census. In his first census appearance as a head of household in 1830, the only woman is listed as being between 20 and 30, which would be consistent with Rachel's age (as is the 1840 census), so they were probably married at least as early as 1830 (corroborated by the 1880 census in which Elijah, b. 1833, states she was his mother).

He is the son of James Buckner who died 1836 Cocke TN. In 1850 he is living next to his brother Edward. The son John of James Buckner and Judith Womack went to Kentucky and not the same.
