He was likely born in Virginia (possibly Essex County, before part of it formed Caroline Co. in 1727), probably in the range of 1700-1705.
An Essex Co. deed indenture to John Holloway in which John Buckner's wife Sarah relinquishes dower is dated 20 Feb 1727/8,[1] which certainly puts his birth date in 1706 or earlier.
He spent much of his early adulthood in southeastern Virginia (Princess Anne Co.) and neighboring Currituck Co. NC but is also frequently mentioned in Caroline Co. VA records. The fact that their son Thomas' tombstone was found in Caroline Co. and mentions that Thomas was born in Currituck[2] proves that these were the same John and Sarah Buckner. This tombstone was also found near "the Neck" in Caroline Co. near property that probably belonged to Richard Buckner of Essex, his reputed father, which tends to strengthen that identification.
It also suggests that the John Buckner who was said to be building a house apparently on land of Richard Buckner Jr.in Caroline Order Books[3] was probably the same John Buckner.
A 14 Feb 1745/6 Caroline order book entry orders that "John Buckner's titheable" be added to the list of titheables, which indicates someone in his family had just become subject to tax (probably age 16 for this context, though in others sometimes 21); this sort of tax event often indicates that a son had come of age (the other adult John Buckner in Caroline had died in 1740, so we can be fairly confident that orders dealing with a live John Buckner through at least the 1740s are him).
The two confirmable birth years in the family are 1739 (Thomas) and 1747 (Phillip), which suggests the existence of another older son. This would not be surprising given that they were married at least as early as 1728, and a son born in early 1729 would become taxable at this date. It is possible that this other son was John Buckner, a lawyer of Caroline County, who married Elizabeth Washington in Stafford Co. in 1760, but this is uncertain.
Various secondary and tertiary sources differ in the year and place of his death: 1749 in Stafford County, Virginia; 1782 in Jones County, Georgia, or Chatham County, North Carolina. The inventory and appraisal of a John Buckner's estate was returned on 12 Mar 1778 in the Caroline Co. court, which has a good likelihood of being this John Buckner's, given his expected age and having eliminated the other known John Buckners of the time.
A deed recorded in the Caroline County order books from John Buckner to his son Phillip (13 Sep 1764, proved by Reuben Samuel and Henry Ware Jr.) shows that John was in Caroline in the later part of his life, as well as providing solid proof of his relationship to Phillip. A second recording from a John and Margaret Buckner to Phillip was proved by Robert Ware and Thomas Buckner (probably John's son who d. 1779) in 1774, noting that another witness, Henry Ware, had gone to "Carolina."
Phillip and Thomas Buckner are his best-evidenced children, from several primary sources. At least one other son named William (who married Anna Mustain) can be surmised from circumstantial and Y-DNA evidence. Many others have been proposed though there is no general consensus on them.
A long-standing problem in Buckner genealogy is the three apparent brothers, Haley, Presley, and William Buckner who were signatories of a petition to create the state of Franklin in 1787. Research by LaMar Buckner and others showed that they seem to be connected to John and Sarah, which has been confirmed by Y-DNA testing of Presley's descendants and Phillip Buckner's descendants, as well as those of William Buckner (d. 1822, married Anna Mustain). The exact relationship is unclear, but the chronology is consistent with Haley (b. 1759), Presley (b. 1769), and William (b. 1761) being grandsons of John and Sarah. Most likely, they were the sons of either Thomas or another as yet undocumented son. Phillip's family is well documented, so he can be eliminated, and William was probably too young to be Haley's father, though it is possible that the younger William and Presley were his.
Among records of John and Sarah Buckner in Currituck Co, one should note an entry from the Currituck Co. Deed Book 3, pgs. 1-2: "John BUCKNER to William HARDING. April 2, 1739. £10 current money of Virginia. 50 acres commonly known by the name of the Reedy Island Neck. /s/ John BUCKNER, Sarah BUCKNER. Wit: Thos. DAVIS, Saml. BAKER, Edwd. (x) COX. Acknowledged by John BUCKNER and his wife Sarah April 13, 1739. Registered June 21, 1739."
John Buckner also appears in the list of jurymen for Currituck in Feb 1739/40.[4]
This is probably the same John Buckner who witnessed the will of William Corbell in neighboring Princess Anne Co. VA on July 4th, 1733.[5] It's worth noting that Richard Buckner of Essex/Caroline (Crozier's choice for his father) must have died in early 1733/4 or late 1733, based on the probate of his estate. A number of other Princess Anne Co records refer to him, including one that mentions his wife Sarah in 1743,[6] which makes it fairly certain that this is the same John Buckner. The pattern of records suggests that they had moved from Currituck to Princess Anne Co. in the early 1740s and then back to Caroline sometime in the mid 1740s. This could suggest some type of maritime occupation, since he does not seem to have held a very large amount of land in the area and Princess Anne at the time and sea faring was the main local business.
The YDNA haplotypes of patrilineal descendants two of John's sons, Phillip and William Buckner, do not match the haplotypes of other descendants of John Buckner. This haplotype is also found among other Buckners who could not be descendants of either Phillip or William and appear to be descendants of Thomas or another unknown son. There are no known YDNA tests from securely identified descendants of John's purported father Richard Buckner, so it is currently unknown which generation the non-paternity occurred in. This may have some connection to a story reported in Crozier that John's wife Sarah was a Buckner by birth; that is, it is possible that John took her surname for some reason, but evidence is scant, and at this time, it is only possible to speculate why John seems to belong to a different biological patriline.
