Speaking to his father, Oren, Jack asked about his grandparents. Oren was brought up by an aunt - a cruel aunt who often kept a meat clever under her apron. He said the surname was also spelled "Buell" - and his brother Louis spelled it that way because a teacher said it should be spelled as such. Father Oren objected, and son Jack agreed. There was also a spelling that went by "Buehl". Jack said the family that brought up Oren lived in Portsmouth, Ohio, and that Buel had origins back to England. According to the 1870 U.S. Census there was and Affred and Susan Buell residing in Portsmouth. But where was his supposed mother? Was it with her family that Oren was living with? Without data from the 1890 U.S. Census it is difficult to conclude. (Conversation with G. Patrick MacKay, Jan. 30, 2017.
