Jennie Buffington was born about 1820 in the Cherokee Nation (East). Her parents were Ellis Buffington and Lydia Wright, both Cherokee. [1] Jennie's first husband was Charles Dougherty; they were the parents of Eli and Ellis Dougherty. Jennie emigrated to Indian Territory as an "Old Settler" (before 1835) but it's unclear exactly when. Charles went alone; Jennie may have gone with her parents and siblings who emigrated in 1834. [2] Jennie married her second husband John Alberty in Indian Territory; they were the parents of Nancy, Lydia, Jake Alberty, Flora, and John. The 1851 Old Settler Roll lists John and Jane Alberty with children Eli, Ellis, Nancy, and Lydia. [3] Jennie apparently died before 1880 since her son Jake stated that neither she nor John was on the 1880 Cherokee Census. [4]
