William and Magdalena married 24 November 1747
“Will of William Buffington dated 3-13-1784, codicil 3-25-1784, pr. 8-10-1784, names five sons: Thomas, William, Joel, David, and Jonathan; two daughters, Ruth Collins & Susannah Sullivan.
Richard and Mary Smith are named in separate items of the will. *20 each to orphans of Christopher Smith. Executors wife Mary, sons Thomas & William. Witnesses: Samuel Dew, Joseph Hall, Christopher Andrews.”[1]
William married Mary Smith, Widow of Christopher Smith, 10 August 1784. His will was written on this date as was the custom to insure the children from the first marriage were provided for. William had no children with Mary. It states in the will that she was the mother of Mary and Richard Smith and William provides for them in his will as the children of Christopher Smith dec'd.
She married Christopher 23 May 1779
William was born in 1724. William Buffington ... He passed away in 1804. [2]
Many have claimed a birth date of 1700 but his mother would have been 13. So he was probably born closer to 1710 when his parents were said to have married.
His parents were: Thomas Buffington and Ruth Cope.
He married Magdalena 'Lena' Ferree 1710–1778, in about 1747.
Their children were:
Joel Buffington 1744–1821
Susannah Buffington 1748–1794
Thomas Buffington 1751–1830
Ruth Buffington 1758–
Jonathan Buffington 1759–
David Buffington 1762–1836
He was a Quaker and pacifist but supported the Patriots. He ran supply wagons to the troops, which was treason under English law and punishable by hanging. He owned Buffington Island in the Ohio River, between Ohio and what is now West Virginia, and ran supplies through that island. For his documented service he is listed in the supporters of the Revolution, in the DAR index.
Died in what is now West Virginia.
Burial location unknown.

Sons of the American Revolution records list him having a son, Benjamin Buffington, 1730-1814, son of William Buffington (and presumably 1st wife, Alice Rupp). NOT TRUE. Benjamin was half or full brother of William, and son of Thomas Buffington, Jr. and unidentified German lady. This myth of William's parentage is repeated out of error in the Yeager book. After the death of Magdalena he married the Widow Mary Arnold Smith, mother of 2 small children, 10 Aug 1784. He wrote his will at that time to protect the interest of his children by Magdalena and identifing the father of the two youngest children, Christopher Smith. I found the will on line in 1996.
