Biography

John Buffington was born in 1710 in West Bradford, Chester, Pennsylvania, where he spent his life. He was the son of Richard Buffington (1679-1741) and Phoebe Grubb (1690-1769), and was named for his grandfather, John Grubb.

The Buffington Family in America [1] states that he “was evidently a man of unusual business ability, as he and his mother settled the estate of his father, and later the estate of his grandfather, Richard the Emigrant. It is easy to picture him as the financier of the church and the strong man of the Bradford Monthly Meeting of Friends.”

John married Elizabeth Way (1710-1764) on 7 Sep 1738 in Chester, Pennsylvania.[2]

His Children with Elizabeth Way were:

  1. Robert Buffington (1737-1801)
  2. Richard Buffington (1741-1742)
  3. John Buffington Jr. (1747-1777)
  4. Caleb Buffington (1745-1746)
  5. Samuel Buffington (1748-1749)
  6. Joshua Buffington (1753-1825)
  7. Mary Buffington (1755-1786)
  8. Jacob Buffington (1756-1831)
  9. Elizabeth Buffington (1758-1759) twin
  10. Phebe Buffington(1758) twin

After Elizabeth died in 1764, John remarried to Jane Thatcher on 21 May 1767[3]. They had one child named Jane Buffington (1768-)

During the Revolutionary War, the sons of John Buffington served at first on the American side. Later, Jacob and Richard fled the country. Nothing is known of his son John Buffington, Jr. in the war years, some think he went to Ireland.

John died in October 1774 in West Bradford, Chester, Pennsylvania. His will was probated on 11 Oct 1774. [4]

This person's factual data and bio do not match. This person's date of birth in the factual fields is before his own father's date of birth. Perhaps two people were merged who should not have been.
