James was born to Richard Buist and Janet (Maxwell) Buist on 1 April 1812 at Mains and Strathmartine, Forfarshire, Scotland. He was baptized there on 12 April 1812.^[1]

James and Barbara McLaren married on 12 December 1835 at Tealing, Forfarshire, Scotland.^[2]

In the 1891 census, James (age 79), Contractor, was the widowed head of household at 84, Liff Road, Liff, Lochee, Forfarshire (Angus), Scotland. His daughter Mary Millar Buist and his grandsons Robert and James were also in the home.^[3]
