Biography

Ann Bunch is said to have been born about 1674, at Cohansey, Salem, New Jersey. She was reportedly the daughter of John Bunch (born about 1630) and Mary Bunch, and the half sister of Paul Bunch and John Bunch of Taylor's Creek.

Research Notes

Claims Concerning Her Origins

Ann's father is said to have come to Lancaster County, Virginia in 1651 as an indentured servant, and later moved to New Kent County, Virginia where he is said to have owned land on the Pamunkey River by the 1670’s. He reportedly received a patent for 450 acres in New Kent County, Viriginia on 18 March 1662 (Patents 5:152). Anna's parents were reportedly married about 1661 in Virginia.

Disputed First Name

Some sites have her 1st name as Agnes, but no sources found with the name.

Disputed Death Claims

Some, without source, claim that this Ann died in 1740 (or 1750), in Virginia, Maryland, or Rhode Island.

Disputed Spouse & Children

Some, without source, and a previous version of this profile, have claimed that Ann/Anna Bunch married William Blethyn / Blevins (born in Fromby, Wales, about 1672), or alternatively a younger William Blevins (abt.1690-), who is also sometimes identified as her son. This supposed couple has also been incorrectly identified as the parents of several Blevins children, including the following:

  1. William Blevins, born about 1691
  2. Richard Blevins, born about 1693 - 1695
  3. James Blevins, born about 1702 - 1708
  4. John Blevins, born about 1708 - 1710
  5. Daniel Blevins, born about 1710 – 1711
  6. Thomas Blevins, born about 1711 - 1712
  7. Mary (Blevins) Walling
  8. Sarah Blevins
  9. Margaret or "Peggy" Blevins
  10. Sally Blevins

All of these claims appear to be unsourced speculation. There is reason to doubt that either William Blevins ever existed (see William Blethyn (abt.1672-aft.1714) and William Blevins (abt.1690-)) and several of the children on this list (i.e., James, John, Daniel & Mary) are the proven children of James Blevin (bef.1688-aft.1745) and Margery (Tosh) Blevin (1689-bef.1743). See their profiles for details.

Neither the Geni.com profile or the Find A Grave memorial cites any source for the claims in this profile & neither of those unsourced profiles are valid sources for a pre-1700 profile. Is anyone aware of a reliable source for the claim that this person ever existed?

I am working on the Blevins family and have not found any evidence to support the claim that an Ann Bunch from New Jersey married a William Blethyn who was an emigrant from Wales. This story gets repeated in many unsourced online genealogies, but it appears to be a fabrication. Is anyone aware of a reliable source for the claims? It is made in Les Blevins book (The Longhunters, cited in the profile for William Blethyn), but he cites no source for the claim and his book itself is not a reliable source.

Because the emigrant from Wales story is current on the internet, I would recommend that you include it, with citations, on the profile under =Research Notes= so that others who come upon the profile will know the this legendary material has been dealt with. I have also begun subsections under Research Notes in the form of questions, i.e. =Did Ann marry William from Wales?= Then you can identify what this legend is and where it appears.

Review the William Blevins (abt.1690-) profile which has quite a bit of 'disputed' information, including this person.

Profile for her linked spouse also has some information.

Thanks Linda. I have updated the profile with a Disputed Spouse & Children section to reflect that information.

Thanks, Scott. Hopefully that will help.
Also, the Ancestry.com source attached to this profile is a broken link and should be removed. The other two sources are unsourced trees which are inconsistent with each other and also with the info in this profile! Is anyone aware of any original sources to document any of the claims in this profile?

I agree with Travis. If the text of this bio is correct, then John Bunch I (b. 1637-abt 1700) [Bunch-40] should be added as her father. I have not seen any original sources that prove this connection, but the current text of this bio does assert it. I suggest that we add [Bunch-40] as her father, marked "uncertain," as a placeholder while we search for original sources that document the connection.

Note that according to a research project sponsored by Ancestry.com, her likely father John Bunch I [Bunch-40] was not from Scotland - his Y DNA haplotype was E1b1a, a sub-Saharan African haplogroup. There is strong evidence to suggest he was the son of John Punch, an indentured servant of African origin from the Jamestown Colony who became a historical figure by running away with two other white indentured servants, getting caught, being sentenced to spend the rest of his life in servitude, and ultimately (possibly) being a maternal direct ancestor of Barack Obama [!]. His alleged son John Bunch I [Bunch-40] was apparently the son of a free woman, and therefore free himself despite his father’s servitude. This John Bunch then acquired land in New Kent VA in the 1650s, and he and his descendants intermarried with women of European origin in the following generations, eventually passing as white. The Ancestry.com study is available here: https://ia803000.us.archive.org/4/items/25004473/25004473.pdf

Another possibility is that she is the daughter of John Bunch II [Bunch-2026], although L Blevins below says this is incorrect, and it would make him pretty young as a father. However, in either case, it does not appear that there is any evidence that Mary Barnard was her mother and I think that relationship should be removed.

John Bunch (Bunch-40), born 1637, was possibly Anna's father.

I believe this is Agnes Anna Bunch, born in Prince Georges County, Myld. to John Bunch II and Mary Bernard (wife 1). There is no evidence that John Bunch II was ever in New Jersey. Both of his wives were born and married in Virginia.

Anna was a child of John Bunch Sr. rather than John Bunch Jr. who was Anna's older brother.

Here is the best information I've found on John Bunch Sr. and John Bunch Jr.

He later moved to New Kent County, Virginia and owned land on the Pamunkey River by the 1670’s. The profile heading should read Anna (Bunch) Blevins not Ann (Anna) Blevins and not Ann (Bunch) Blevins. I don't know how the name Brunch got there nor do I know how to go about correcting it. She was not a sister of Anna Bunch she was Anna Bunch.

Not sure where the 1674 date came from, it would mean her father was 9 years old. The 1690 date is the one most recognized on the web.
