Mary was born on 23 March 1772 in Crosswicks, Burlington, New Jersey, USA. She was the daughter of John Bunting and Patience (Tilton) Bunting.^[1][2]

In 1787 Mary's parents John and Patience Bunting along with their 6 children were removed from the Chesterfield Society of Friends ^[3]
